Lesson 5: Examining Earth Materials (PT)
Soil is composed of a complex mixture of weathered rock fragments (inorganic matter), living and decayed plant and animal material (organic matter), air and water. Sand, silt, clay, gravel and hummus (earth’s soil components) each have unique characteristics when mixed with water. Dry soil component observations should be compared/contrasted with the water form of the soil components. When comparing the characteristics students can see that some components will be easily eroded while others may be deposited as soon as the movement of water begins to speed up and/or slow down.
Claims, Evidence, & Reasoning Chart: State the claim: Different soil properties affect the ways in which soil erodes and deposits in water. Use evidence from their stream table to support their claim.
